The President said he was pleased that the Bank continues to be one of the most important development partners for Malawi.

Dr Adesina confirmed that the Bank will increase its portfolio to Malawi from the current MWK212 billion to MWK400 billion in the 2016/17 financial year.

The AfDB has made a further commitment of $1 million immediately for us to purchase food for people who are food insufficient and an additional $7 million for rapid humanitarian assistance and response and $28 million for various projects across the country.

The African Development Bank remains one of the most important development partners for Malawi in various sectors and thematic areas, such as health, agriculture, water, irrigation, transport, education, as well as public finance management. In general, the Bank has endeavoured to align its support in these sectors to the priorities of the Government.

“It is Government’s commitment that through the support from institutions like the AfDB, we set the foundation of weaning the country from aid dependence to ensure that we are truly independent,” said the President.

The Bank has committed to continue providing support to the Government of Malawi, preferably through budget support which is our preferred mode of aid delivery as we continue implementing the reforms.
