A landmark moment was marked yesterday as the First Minister of Scotland, Rt. Hon. John Swinney, met with the President of Malawi, His Excellency Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika, to commemorate 20 years since the signing of the first Scotland–Malawi Cooperation Agreement in 2005.
Their discussions highlighted key priorities for both nations—advancing climate resilience, driving health innovation, expanding education opportunities, and promoting sustainable economic growth. Both leaders reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening these areas of collaboration to deliver real benefits for communities across Malawi.
Since the establishment of the cooperation agreement, Scotland’s engagement has made a meaningful contribution to Malawi’s development journey—supporting grassroots initiatives, promoting equality, and fostering shared prosperity.
This meeting demonstrated how Scotland’s partnership, within the wider UK relationship with Malawi, continues to create lasting impact on the ground.
First Minister Swinney commended the enduring friendship and collaboration between the two countries, while President Mutharika expressed appreciation for Scotland’s continued solidarity and mutual learning over the past two decades.
As both nations look ahead, the Scotland–Malawi partnership stands as a model of effective international cooperation—built on trust, shared values, and a commitment to progress.
