Malawi and Scotland Renew Centuries-Long Partnership During Lilongwe Reception

The Malawi High Commission in London is pleased to highlight the reception held in Lilongwe where Honourable George Chaponda, M.P., Minister of Foreign Affairs, joined Her Excellency Rebecca Fabrizi, Acting British High Commissioner, in hosting Right Honourable John Swinney, MSP, First Minister of Scotland.

The event served as a celebration of the enduring bonds between Malawi and Scotland—ties that have flourished for over 160 years through collaboration in education, health, trade, climate justice, and people-to-people engagement.

In his remarks, First Minister Swinney reaffirmed Scotland’s steadfast commitment to the Malawi–Scotland Partnership, as the two nations mark 20 years of the modern cooperation agreement. He emphasized Scotland’s continued support for Malawi’s efforts in inclusive education, renewable energy development, and climate resilience.

Minister Chaponda commended the strong and historic partnership, expressing the Government of Malawi’s deep appreciation for Scotland’s unwavering friendship and contribution to national development. He underscored the importance of expanding cooperation in areas such as trade, innovation, and renewable energy, to promote mutual prosperity and sustainable growth.

The reception was a warm affirmation of shared history, friendship, and a renewed vision for an even stronger Malawi–Scotland partnership in the years ahead.
